Evaporator Coil
The AC evaporator coil is a network of refrigerant-filled tubing inside the evaporator (the portion of your central air conditioning system that is inside the house). In order to cool the air in your home, the air conditioner draws in air through the return ducts and passes it over the AC evaporator coil. During this process, the extremely cold refrigerant absorbs the heat in the air so it can be recirculated in the home. It often takes multiple cycles of this process before the air has reached the desired temperature.
If your cooling system isn’t properly maintained, there could be adverse effects for your AC evaporator coil. When air filters aren’t regularly changed or if the ductwork is poorly sized, it can inhibit the flow of air in the home and cause the evaporator to freeze over. This can cause a number of problems for your AC and eventually lead to a costly air conditioner replacement. However, there are some things you can do to ensure your AC evaporator coil continues to run properly:
- Change your air filters every one to three months
- Clean your evaporator annually
- Have regular air conditioning maintenance performed on your system
