How to Decide Between Repairing & Replacing Your AC

There are a few things you should consider when trying to decide whether it’s best to repair or replace your AC system:

The Age of Your Air Conditioner

How old is your AC system? Most units last between 10 – 12 years, and after that, they become very expensive to repair and generally break down frequently. Older systems may even require parts that have been discontinued, making them very expensive and difficult to get a hold of.

If your unit is just a few years old and is normally pretty trouble-free but has recently displayed minor trouble signs, AC repair is the smart, cost-effective option.

The Current Condition of Your Air Conditioner

What is the current condition of your AC system? Is your air conditioner made by a quality brand like Lennox? How often does it experience breakdowns? Does it blow warm or lukewarm air? Does the unit take a particularly long time to cool your home? Are certain parts of your New Jersey home cooler than other parts, causing an uncomfortable living environment?

If your unit breaks down frequently, takes a long time to cool your home, or is made by an inferior brand, air conditioning replacement may be the best option for you and the most cost-effective down the road.

The Energy Efficiency of Your Air Conditioner

If you decide to repair an old AC system, it will still have the same efficiency it was rated for when it was manufactured. Older units are far less efficient than newer ones due to improvements in technology, as well as tighter energy standards implemented by the government.

AC units are rated by SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratings), which is a measure of how efficient a given air conditioning system is. Today’s air conditioners must have a minimum of 13 SEER to be installed and a 14 SEER to be considered ENERGY STAR qualified.
